A bone to pick with ITWeb.co.za

I have a bone to pick. I think you may agree with me as well.

I wanted to go to this article on the ITWeb.co.za site, about South African expats buying property online.

But, that article took literally 4 minutes (I started timing after about 30 seconds) to load for me… And I’m on a 1MB connection in London. 4 minutes!!

I got irritated, so I loaded the main page to try from there, and did a search for the articles title (copied from the title of the article I received by email today) from the search box on the main page. The search then took about another 4 minutes to load as well, and didn’t bring up a match for the search either “No documents matched the query“. So that tells me that they don’t search the title of news articles that they put on a news site??

I mean, come on… This is rediculous! I then loaded the main page again, which took another 4 minutes.

But by now I’ve given up if I’m a normal browser.

And this is my point – how are we (being South Africans) going to gain the respect of overseas people (and the rest of the world for that matter), if they (being the rest of the world, particularly the 1st world economies) can’t see what we’re doing?

Are we going to raise the fence further?

You know what’s even more irritating? The content seems to be held up by an ad banner, which is an example of very, very poor coding. And that is so easy to fix.

I didn’t have a problem loading that article, but I do have AdBlock installed. The ITWeb site needs a serious overhaul, it’s a real mess. I tried to view some of their archived website reviews (listed at the bottom of http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/reviews/websites/review050315.asp?S=Internet&A=INT&O=FRGN) and received ASP errors instead.

Cool – probably the advert that was the problem then.

It is a real mess (so, like, 5 years ago), and I also got the ASP errors when trying to view a page from there:

Should we tell them ;-)

I think this is a serious problem with a lot of stuff SA people are doing back home – blissful ignorance – how will they take us seriously?
