Go and see Batman Begins

OK, so I like comic books and graphic novels. Who doesn’t?

Growing up, I couldn’t get enough of the usual suspects – Superman, Spiderman, Hulk, Wolverine, Judge Dredd, Fantastic Four, Green Lantern, Silver Surfer and of course Batman. For me it was both the art and the story that kept me on the edge of my seat, dashing to the newsagent on weekends to get the latest copy. I remember when working in a national newsagent (CNA) in South Africa as an 18 year old, that perhaps the only perk was that I got early and easy access to all the latest releases. By far and away, my favourites were Wolverine and Batman. The rest could have died, but it was my Wolverine and Batman fix that came first.

Going back a few years, the Batman movies for me have been a bit of a let down. IMHO, the first one, and possibly the second one were the only ones I actually enjoyed. The combination of ridiculous and camp made me think that they’d lost the plot with the story somewhere, and so although I wanted to go and watch this latest release, I did so with some reservation: was it going to measure up to the trailer?

So, without me giving the plot away (which is fairly easy to guess anyways if you know the story even a little), just go and see it. It definitely does measure up, and the cast do a great job. I can’t think of another movie offhand where such a great cast pull off a movie where the focus is not lost on the telling of the story. The FX are great, the design and sets are great, but most importantly, it is dark, sometimes gritty, and realistic – you don’t walk away feeling that you’ve been ripped off by cheap parlour tricks.

Some additional arb comments:
He can fight with a sword!
I gotta get me one of those cars ;-)
Batman vs Wolverine – still a standoff, although Wolverine may lose it and just go ballistic, in which case his mutant healing would give him the upper hand.
