HMV Digital not the Top Dog

by oneafrikan on September 5, 2005

Or is that “not the Dogs Bollocks?
Dogs Bollocks

One of my friends tried to install HMV Digital, and it killed everything on his machine – all MS apps (.Net environment, Outlook, Word, even Paint), Google apps (Google Talk and Desktop) were crashed, leaving only the HMV installer!! Apparently, this application has been developed with Microsoft, amidst quite a lot of fanfare (apparently they’re competing with the iPod and iTunes)…

Alistair Baker, Microsoft Managing Director, UK and Vice President EMEA, said:
“This leading edge retail project enables music fans to buy music in-store and online – in fact anywhere. Consumers will be able to listen to the music they want to hear on a whole range of devices from different manufacturers. The development of the HMV jukebox player combines the industry knowledge of the HMV team with the software development, product expertise and consulting skills of Microsoft. HMV Digital is all about freedom of choice and Microsoft is proud that its technology is at the heart of this service.”

Not if it doesn’t install!!

Nice one guys, try again ;-)

Well unfortunately I have already installed it and it has left a trail on my machine, namely the reg keys which I have manually removed. The problem is that there is no way to uninstall this thing so where have the extra 10 megs of installation components gone, I didnt see it trying to uninstall itself after failing to complete!!!

Hahaha ;-)
Keep us posted – if you find those Reg keys it may be useful for others as well…

Second time worked like a charm for me :-)

But that’s not how it’s supposed to work ;-)

Very true…

Software development/installation etc. – if I could get 1 pound for everytime something worked first-time, well, let’s just say – I’d be retired, on my own island, sipping a pina colada and being fanned by a very fit cabana boy right now.

Instead, I’m sitting at my desk, coding away…

haha I never knew you liked cabana boys?

“fit” cabana boys… “FIT” being the operative word.

I tried the install now and it failed for me too… shut down Trillian in the process but no other side-effects so far. And definately not going to bother with a second attempt!

… or they’ve updated / improved the installer since…
What’s it like?

I installed the 1.3 version off the site.

Well – it’s black and pink ;-)

Actually its runs much faster than their first version. Overall I like it, easy to use and nice look-and-feel.

The hmv store part is a bit slow to load though.

That’s cool – good to hear positive comments about the HMV stuff. Pity about the store though…

I have been using the program for a while now.

It’s very slow and very annoying. When it runs my system goes very slow.

It usually takes ages to load up and when it does, refuses to connect you to the search site saying it’s unavailable.

..Oh and now when i try to open it.. it won’t open at all!

Click the button and nothing.
Restart the computer and still nothing!
Uninstall and reinstall.. still nothing.

Don’t use HMV DIGITAL … waste of money!!!!!

Yup – that’s what a lot of people are saying!!!
Pity they spent so much money doing it ;-0
