MP3 or Nothing

by oneafrikan on September 12, 2005

Andrew told me about AllofMP3 (http://allofmp3.com) late last week, and he’s how downloading some tracks to try it out. We’ve just had a discussion about it at lunch which was pretty interesting as well.

Seems their model allows you to download music at a small cost (you pay for credit in advance then work your way out of credit), where they pass on a percentage to the artists and take a percentage themselves. If you want to read better review try the top two Google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=allofmp3+review) results.

2 Things are important here:
1) They’re based in Russia, so their copyright laws are different. This is probably a good thing for the consumer in this case.
2) You download in MP3 format, which means you can do what you like with the track; unlike iTunes or any of the MSFT equivalents, where you are locked into a player and/or device ‘cos of the file format…

I haven’t used it yet, but probably will if Andrew reports back positively.

Gotta love the disruptive business models coming out to play… ;-)

I’ll check it out, but I’m skeptical. Every mp3 site I’ve EVER seen that’s been based out of Russia was illegal. Many Russian mp3 sites just let you download whatever you want.

Since they’re in Russia, the RIAA can’t go after them, but I’m rather curious. I wonder if they’re really passing along a % of the money to the artists, or if they’re just ‘reselling’ the songs as they see fit.

I hear ya Josh – I’m skeptical too – on the internet, you can be a dog in his underwear and nobody will know…

I spose it will come out eventually if and when they slip up – assuming it is bogus site. If not, best of luck to them!!

I must say i was very sceptical as soon as i saw the word ‘Russian’ on the site. After doing some searching on Google i was surprised not to find any critical comments on it. I still think it is in the major ‘iffy’ section.

I’ll wait and see what happens. I’ve purchased a couple of albums and all seems well, so far…
