HOWTO: Dual Boot Linux and Windows on a Laptop

_ Matthew J. Miller’s HOWTO: Dual Boot Linux and Windows on a Laptop

Dual Booting Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP on a Toshiba Laptop

My goal is to add Ubuntu Linux to the laptop which already has Windows XP installed. This HOWTO does not cover the case where Linux is installed first, then Windows is (re)installed (if anyone know of good HOWTOs for this scenario, let me know so that I can link them). I think, in general, installing Linux second is more useful.

The cool thing about installing Ubuntu is that it just works (isn’t there another OS like that?).

This HOWTO has some great tips and is well written, so check it out if you’re going to be installing Ubuntu on a WinXP machine.

i don’t mean to be a party ‘pooper'(is there such a word?),,, but i tried to install ubuntu on a hp-nx6125 the one with an amd-turion 64 bit processor,,, well ubuntu failed to to start off the initial setup,,, even the live disc failed,,, but fedora core 2 was able to work,,,

but i did not want fedora, i wanted the ‘cool’ linux distro,,, so then i realised the problem was the installation cd, was for intel 86 architecture,,, okay something like that,,, but,,, shouldn’t linux work everywhere?

anyway, I will attempt again,,, i will follow this guide,,,

hold your breath, i dive in again.

Hey Lebogang

You want to go to the Ubuntu shipit site, and order some 64bit install cd’s…

Happy installing! ;-)

thanks for having your site! I was browsing for advice on dual booting with Ubuntu and XP. It works wonderfully now!

lol, I had to laugh at your SA post too. People ask me that question all the time (what was it like growing up there?).

When’d you leave the SA?

No problem – it’s my pleasure ;-)

I left SA in January of 2002, so it’s almost 4 years to the day now…

I left (not willingly) with my parents 11 years ago. Have you been back to visit at all?

Yea, been back at least 4 or 5 times since!! Have to ;-)
