Zimbabwe crisis on ITV
1 Comment Published by Gareth Knight December 23rd, 2005 in Africa, South Africa, DiasporaI’m busy watching a news feature of how the Zimbabwean police are going on to farms in Zim, and just taking what they want without asking or paying, then selling it or auctioing it of for money. What angers me is that the ITV presenter made it sound like this never happened until “this […]

_ Google Press Center: Zeitgeist
It turns out that looking at the aggregation of billions of search queries people type into Google reveals something about our curiosity, our thirst for news, and perhaps even our desires. Considering all that has occurred in 2005, we thought it would be interesting to study just a few of the significant events, and names that make this a memorable year. (We’ll leave it to the historians to determine which ones are lasting and which ephemeral.) We hope you enjoy this selective view of our collective year.
Makes for some pretty interesting reading… Notice how Wikipedia has grown steadily, whilst podcasting hasn’t yet reached it’s tipping point.

Un Accomodated > living in South African townships

Thats the story. Why am telling this story, well, last night I was stranded in Rosebank. So I spent a night at the ‘Rosebank Hotel’, it cost me a 900 bucks 150 for the porn channel.
I feel dirty.
I’ve often had people ask me what it was like growing up in South Africa, and my response is normally “pretty much the same as you had, I imagine, give or take a few major things not part of my consciousness…”. Anyways, this post from Lebogang in Johannesburg had me laughing out loud, ‘cos it’s so true and so real, yet despite it all there is an honesty and a positive side which you just have to laugh at

south africa, townships, humour, photography The DOs and DON’Ts of Picking Up a Girl in the Computer Lab
0 Comments Published by Gareth Knight December 19th, 2005It’s best to start out subliminally. Head to a music website and find a soothing, sexual track, something like Marvin Gaye, Norah Jones, or MC Hammer. Turn the volume down so low that she can barely hear it, just high enough that she’s hearing it loud and clear where it matters: in her loins. She won’t even know what she’s hearing, or where it’s coming from, but she’ll be strangely drawn to you and your lab computer, like a baby to an inviting teat.
ROTFL!
Blimey, this is great humour
Go check it out…

Problems with Firefox 1.5 extensions
2 Comments Published by Gareth Knight December 19th, 2005 in Software, The browsersIs anyone having any problems with installing extensios for Firefox 1.5?
… and don’t tell me to go to Tools > Options > Content > Warn me when… ‘cos even when I add “addons.mozilla.org” to the allowed exceptions list, it doesn’t seem to change anything…
Anyone?

I’m a big fan of the X-Men… and from the teaser it looks like this installment of the franchise is going to be a good one.
A good deal of the credit for Novell’s turnaround must go to Schmidt, who excels at getting the best out of his geeks. He has used his tech savvy to bring focus to Novell’s product line and his geek-cred to reenergize a workforce of highly skilled but (until recently) deeply dispirited technologists. In general, Schmidt speaks of his geeks in complimentary terms, while acknowledging their vulnerabilities and shortcomings. “One of the main characteristics of geeks is that they are very truthful,” says Schmidt (who, in fact, uses the term “geek” only occassionally). “They are taught to think logically. If you ask engineers a precise question, they will give you a precisely truthful answer. That also tends to mean that they’ll only answer the question that you asked them. If you don’t ask them exactly the right question, sometimes they’ll evade you — not because they’re lying but because they’re being so scrupulously truthful.”
There’s a saying in Silicon Valley: “The geeks shall inherit the earth.”
Good article that talks about how to get the best out of your geeks. Recommended reading if you haven’t already…
HOWTO: Dual Boot Linux and Windows on a Laptop
6 Comments Published by Gareth Knight December 18th, 2005_ Matthew J. Miller’s HOWTO: Dual Boot Linux and Windows on a Laptop
Dual Booting Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP on a Toshiba Laptop
My goal is to add Ubuntu Linux to the laptop which already has Windows XP installed. This HOWTO does not cover the case where Linux is installed first, then Windows is (re)installed (if anyone know of good HOWTOs for this scenario, let me know so that I can link them). I think, in general, installing Linux second is more useful.
The cool thing about installing Ubuntu is that it just works (isn’t there another OS like that?).
This HOWTO has some great tips and is well written, so check it out if you’re going to be installing Ubuntu on a WinXP machine.
