SWeb 2.0 drinks and BBQ

Here’s an updated post with details, regards the geek SW Web 2.0 drinks and BBQ happening this Friday evening in sunny South West London.

_ Check out the original post
_ Check out the follow up post about how to have a good time ;-)

A few of us have been chatting about the long train trips / cab fares home from events that always seem to be in Central or East London, so we’ve decided that we’re going to try do something a little closer to home, for all the obvious reasons… so it’s all about Web 2.0 in South West London.

The details:
Friday the 19th May, 7pm onwards, location is my house for drinks and a proper BBQ;
SW19 (taking my address off for now);
_ View the Upcoming.org post as well (http://upcoming.org/event/73637/).

My place is one minute from the station, and about 40 seconds from a butcher and a Threshers.
I’m thinking that I’ll go get good steaks from the butcher near us if you ask me to, and prepare them properly myself. All you’ll have to do is bring yourself, drinks and a snack or two.

Open invite - everyone welcome ;-)

Secrets to a great BBQ

Last week my brother Morgan had a braai (or commonly known as a BBQ to the less informed ;-) for his mates at our place, to welcome in the summer, and we all had a great time.
_ Here’s the Flickr photoset (yes, I’ve discovered why Flickr is going to change the world).

This week Friday I’m organising and holding a SW Web 2.0 drinks / BBQ at our place as well, to welcome in the summer and to actually meet socially so many of the people I meet/email/call - we are human after all, aren’t we?
_ Here’s the Upcoming.org post.
_ Here’s the original blog post.

So, the following are secrets to a great braai / BBQ:

  1. Bring meat - you are a carnivore aren’t you?
  2. Bring whatever you want to drink - you can’t expect your host to finance your drinking problem can you? ;-)
  3. Bring your better half - that way you have a safe helper home if things get pear shaped. If not, you can talk about the great meat you sampled the night before, the morning after
  4. Bring some snacks - good meat takes time to cook well, and we don’t want to rush it do we? To fend off the nibbles, bring snacks - my personal favs are pringles with a dip or two
  5. Arrive timeously enough to actually get your meat, and hopefully talk to a few people - that’s the purpose! ;-)

So without further ado, here are some photo’s to help whet your appetite:
First, you need a cooking utensil:
The cooking utensil
Then you need some fuel:
Real BBQ's need real fuel
Then you need to smell it!:
You should be smelling that fram far away...
Then you get Del.icio.us meat:
Meat!
Meat!
Then, if you fancy, you get to sit around the fire/embers and shoot the shit like we used to in the old days:
Sitting around the embers is awesome this time of year

_ There’s a Flickr photoset of more of these as well…

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Which side are you on?

After my still on-going IBM Thinkpad T42p debacle, I’m not sure I should blog this, but in faith of the technician coming to pay me a personal fix-it visit on Monday/Tuesday, I’m going to suspend my cynicism for the meantime, and post what seems to be one of the only PC manufacturers attempts to compete with Mac lust…  Nice use of flash ;-)
Go check it out:

As for myself, I’d like a Titanium one of these, please…

Summer of BBQ’s

Can’t tell you how much I enjoyed last night, the simple pleasure of sitting with my Mum and Bro, outside on the patio drinking some chilled white wine and enjoying our dinner.

Summer is finally here, and I’m looking forward to a summer of BBQ’s to remember!

The Second Chance Tuesday UK Revival Show

I can remember how I felt when the boom was happening in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. I was stuck in deepest darkest Africa, watching from afar the feeding frenzy that was the first internet boom, wishing beyond all reasonable hope that I could somehow be a part of it all.

My lot was to end up doing enterprise web consulting, so that I could earn my way over to the UK, but funnily enough things got VERY pear shaped in the months before I arrived, so that when I did arrive it felt like I was at the edge of a dried up oasis, with everyone left either trying desperately to become the thorny bush that survives without water for 75 years, or the lone survivor fending everyone off at the edge of the muddying waters but still telling everyone how sweet the water tasted…

One of my memories back then was sitting on a dial up modem at the wee hours reading the sites overseas to see what was going on - Second Chance Tuesday being one of them. I often wondered what the events were like (being naturally gregarious when I’m in a good mood), and wished that they would do something similiar in Johannesburg. Typically, they didn’t. Not sure if there is anything happening there now either…

Anyways, back to last weeks Second Chance Tuesday event in Central London, (wrote up the first event here), and I’m not entirely convinced that the prevailing attitude that was the swnsong of the first boom has changed much since then… there seems to be a few experienced campaigners who know their stuff and who aren’t being drawn into the feeding frenzy, but there also seems to be a few keen on jumping on the bandwagon without any real business models behind them.

That said, this is just my humble opinion founded through several conversations and some dastardly eavesdropping. One person that had an investor badge on replied to my question of “so what brings you here?” with “I’m just here for the money, don’t know anything about the web at all” - which makes me wonder whether investment and knowledge of the industry one is investing in are complimentary or not? It also makes me wonder what second Chance Tuesdays is about - who is it actually targeted at?

The flip side was that there were a few people that did seem to have an idea - one gentleman represented a group of around 300 angel investors who would only invest in a second round (so now we have second round angel investors), who seemed to like the idea of a bootstrapped model (a few people had no idea what bootstrapping was, some of which were apparently already doing it, and others were just wanting to burn cash) since it does prove some legitimacy in a ventures claims for being a good investment.

As such, I don’t think that it’s the equivalent of a speed dating event for people with ideas needing cash and vice versa (ie matching people up), but more of an informal networking event where you get to see familiar faces, meet new people - whether you meet the right people seemed to depend on how many people you could meet, thus increasing your chances through playing the numbers game - and have a few bevvies.

Some additional point form thoughts off the top of my head:

  1. Definitely more of a buzz at SxSW
  2. For me, too much talk of raising VC and not enough talk of viable sustainable business models
  3. The little coloured badges to identify whether you are an entrepreneur, investor or other are still too small
  4. Was too noisy / loud, but the bar was better and cheaper
  5. A few people were talking about some funds that had been raised, where the money they were talking of was stupid, silly amounts of money, so there does seem to be an awakening of UK investors happening

All in all, I think that Second Chance Tuesdays is doing a good job of bringing people together in an informal environment, and I hope that they continue to do so. But if you’re looking for an entrepreneur / investor dating service, then you’re either going to have to hone your networking skills, or keep trying… ;-)

List item bullets disappear in IE

I’m working on a show/hide, menu system using bullets, and what’s happening is that when I show a menu block on page load, the list item custom bullets all look fine, but then when I open up another menu block that was hidden, only the first list item bullet is showing, with the rest blank.

Pretty damn frustrating ‘cos no combination of margins, wrapper divs, nested list items or background images / custom bullet items fixes this. I think it may just be something to do with IE and showing / hiding elements… Of course, this all works as planned and coded in FF…

So far, following the links on this Google search haven’t yielded much. Throw me a ‘frikkin bone here!

We all know that IE doesn’t play nicely, but unfortunately IE has the most market share, so you’ve just gotta do what you gotta do…

Update:
I’ve uploaded the working code here for you to dissect and play around with:

Any ideas or suggestions?

IBM Thinkpad T42p blue screen of death agony

So I got my Thinkpad back from IBM today, and it’s totally FUBAR. I was relly excited up until the first blue screen of death, then it just got worse and worse.

WTF!!?

The support guy was really helpful, but to be honest from my experiences with hardware, Windows and tech support in general, there is a small chance that my machine will ever be back to it’s nippy self again without a complete re-build of the machine (and I really don’t want that). And more to the point, I think that IBM have lost humble me as an advocate (they’ve had at least 3 machines purchased as a result of recommendations I’ve made to clients and friends), unless they can pull something serious out of the bag.

I feel violated. ;-(
