Monetising users: It is simple but not easy

A lot of people have asked me how social sites monetise their users, so this is a great place to start….
_ Henrik Torstensson’s Weblog: It is simple but not easy

Important to note the point about scale…. It’s not a case of “if we get 1% of the people in China, we’ll be rich” - simply doesn’t work like that, and from my experience, any site you start takes you years to get to the scale we’re seeing in some large, well known, established players like FB, Bebo & MySpace (to name a few). Also remember that scale, and scaling are two different matters.

Hat tip to Nils.

Ever seen Web2.0 in Arabic?

I’m extremely proud to say that due to some hard work from Ali in our office, we’ve released Arabic into Kindo… so now you get web2.0 family tree building and family social networking in Arabic, and 11 other languages…

Pretty neat eh? ;-) Check it out and blow your mind…

Kindo gets TechCrunched in France

Nice and rewarding ;-) Shows the benefit of being in 11 languages…

Build a fancy looking family tree with Kindo, from Webware

Some linkage and a good review from Webware ;-)

_ Build a fancy looking family tree with Kindo | Webware : Cool Web apps for everyone

Besides the very basic and simple implementation of the tree creation, there’s also an integrated social network for families who want to dig a little deeper. Each family member gets their own profile, which shows off any included personal information, along with a list of updates they or others have made on the service. There’s also a status update option a la Facebook and Twitter that lets you announce what you’re doing to your family members. More helpful, however, is the birthday and anniversary reminder tool, which will automatically let you know when there’s a family birthday coming up. While both these things can be had elsewhere, it’s a nice touch.

Thanks guys!!

New features & improvements to kindo

We’ve been hard at work since we went live with Kindo, and yesterday did another major release which we’re really proud of…

Check it out, you should start to see the first signs of our social direction, which sets us apart from being “yet another genealogy application”… 11 Languages helps too… ;-)

_ Kindo - Some new features & improvements to kindo

The kindo team is very proud to announce that we have released a number of new features which we hope will improve our users’ experience.

Firstly, we have added 3 new languages, namely Russian, Turkish & Brazilian Portuguese, which now brings the tally to 11.

Our family

Secondly, we have added a brand new page called “Our family”, where you can view the latest updates from all of your active family members. It also has a section with family statistics, so you will be able to see some interesting facts about your tree – the more data the better, so start updating those profiles ;-)

Profile in a kindo family tree dating back to 1702

Pretty cool to know that we’re developing something that can do this, for people in 9 languages spread across 116 countries ;-)

_ Kindo - Profile in a kindo family tree dating back to 1702

We recently had a posting on our forum where one of our users, Rudolf Hager told us that he and his uncle had built a family tree dating back to 1702.

And we’ve got so much more coming!

    Who’s behind Kindo?

If you’re interested in knowing who’s behind Kindo on a daily basis, then take a gander - been updated today (show some, not all):
    _ Kindo - About

No more stealth startup - Kindo is born today!

Right now there are lots of proud moms and pops here at our Putney offices! Today we’ve just released our first public version of Kindo [www.kindo.com], along with some nice improvements to our baby:

    1. Pruning is better (and you can use your keyboard to move your family tree around)
    2. Invitations are smoother (and we’re playing nicer with Hotmail)
    3. Your profile page has more information for your family (more status updates, and a better calendar)

Since we’re no longer in “beta”, you can be sure that your tree and pages will work as expected. So continue to build your beautiful trees, and share it with your whole family. And tell your friends to start their own tree too!

We feel we’re far from the finished article - Kindo will grow up, evolve, and get bigger and better all the time. We’ve launched a new Kindo forum [http://forum.kindo.com] too, which is a good place to ask questions if you need any help. Please tell us what you do and don’t like about Kindo, and also tell us how you want it to grow too!

    Bye for now! ;-)

Community Contest 2007: Learning to Share

    Check it out:

Community Guy - Jake McKee » Community Contest 2007: Learning to Share
Any robust community is all about sharing; it’s what powers the group. Without an open exchange of ideas, content, and kind words, you don’t have community you merely have a group. Sharing is the social glue that creates long lasting relationships.

In a quest to reduce risk, holding their cards close to the vest, business has forgotten how to share. Your customers & community members what you to pass along information, give them insight into the company/brand they love, and create a relationship that’s based on a collaboration. Trust is built through this collaboration, and trust is a core tenet of customer interaction.

Think about it - what makes you go back to a community, or enjoy it? It’s the interaction and the sharing…

Looking forward to Ubuntu 7.10 Release

I’m looking forward to the next release of Ubuntu, and if things go well in Technovated Towers then I’m gonna make the switch to Ubuntu for sure.

Ubuntu 7.10 Release Candidate | Ubuntu
The Ubuntu developers are hurrying to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software that the open source and free software communities have to offer. This is the Ubuntu 7.10 release candidate, which brings a host of excellent new features.

We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable and suitable for testing by any user. The final stable version will be released in October 2007.

Most important for me is the visual X.org editor which should enable me to continue using two monitors… Am hoping that Compiz Fusion will come out better and more usable then the current release ;-)

    Kindo coverage around the world….

We’ve been working pretty hard the last few weeks to get Kindo to a Public release, so this week we started telling people around the world about Kindo, and asking for their feedback.

The result has been that we’ve now got people from literally all over the world (73 countries now) using Kindo, with the exception of a few countries/areas (Greenland, most of Africa, some of the Middle East, Mongolia, and two South American countries I don’t want to name here ;-) So it’s pretty exciting stuff! To react to this we’re going to be rolling out some more languages soon, and focussing on making the application as consistent as possible across all languauges (not easy given differing string lengths…).

Anyways, onto the blog posts and reviews that I want to say thanks for! (In no particular order at all)
